    Motorcycling actually stands for pure emotion, but today it should be about a sober number. Or rather, the new ECE 22-06 standard, according to which motorcycle helmets will be tested in the future. We tell you what the new standard is all about and what measures result from it.

    • All motorcycle helmets that are currently in circulation with the ECE 22.05 standard can still be worn and are safe!
    • Since the beginning of 2021, motorcycle helmets can also be tested and approved according to the new ECE 22-06 standard.
    • From 03.06.2022, tests will then only be carried out according to the new standard.
    • From June 3rd, 2023, it is no longer allowed to produce helmets with the 22.05 standard.
    • From 03.01.2024, the sale of helmets with standard 22.05 could then be prohibited.
    • Older helmets with the 22.05 standard, which are still in circulation after the production ban, can still be worn.
    • So there is no obligation to exchange older helmets.

    The new standard ECE 22-06 in detail

    The first question that arises is: Why a new standard? The top priority in head protection is maximum safety. For this reason, the helmet shell, visor and other helmet components are subject to a constant improvement process. Although these innovation steps seem marginal at first, a lot of potential in terms of safety and comfort can be seen over the years. Tests have been carried out in accordance with the ECE 22.05 standard for 20 years. It seems only logical that new test parameters are included in the tests. In a word, motorcycle helmets are becoming even "safer". And what does that mean exactly?

    Just looking at the helmet shell shows that the test requirements have been tightened. According to the FEMA (Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations), in contrast to the earlier test, the point of impact may be changed. This used to be mandatory, now the examiners can choose it themselves. In addition, the test is carried out at a higher impact speed.

    The new test standard also addresses the increasingly popular flip-up helmets, modular helmets and open face helmets with flanged chin parts. According to the new regulation, motorcycle helmets with and without chin protection or chin section are checked even more meticulously for safety features. The integrated sun visor is now also attracting greater attention. This not only has to be able to be moved independently of the visor, but should also ensure more color fidelity. Traffic light colors should be recognized more clearly.

    Every biker knows how important the visor is. It not only stands for clear visibility, but also keeps foreign bodies away from the biker's face. The new standard strengthens the requirements for the visors and their sophisticated visor mechanics. The visor must not burst after the impact of a steel test bullet that is shot at a speed of 60 m / s. In the impact test method, rotational acceleration measurements are also performed.

    According to the new test procedure, the motorcycle helmet must no longer be so easy to pull off forwards or backwards. It therefore “sits” better. Even the climatic conditions now play a bigger role, because the motorcycle helmets have to prove themselves with their materials (e.g. EPS Styrofoam) at minus 20 degrees Celsius.

    In general, the test according to ECE 22-06 is now much more extensive and includes a larger batch. Whereas in the past, 17 helmets had to be tested for the basic approval for a helmet model that was offered in two shell sizes, 33 test helmets are now required for the new regulation.
