RIDING HELMET SAFETY
First of all, it is important to pay attention to the relevant safety codes. In recent years, there have been some changes to the safety of riding helmets and riding caps. The standard for riding helmets DIN EN 33951 has been replaced by EN 1384, which in turn lost its validity at the end of 2014. If you plan to buy a helmet according to EN 1384, it should not have been produced before 2013. The currently valid standard is VG1 01.040 2014-1, short VG 1. According to the old standard, the helmet shell has to withstand a shock absorption test on the front, the head and the rear head, as well as a penetration test, a strength test on the chin strap, a stripping test and screen resilience test. All these safety features were additionally checked with the VG 1. Furthermore, a chin guard is no longer permissible as this can lead to jaw fractures in the event of a fall. A new European standard on Equestrian helmets is currently under discussion and is expected to come into force in 2016.
THE LIFE OF A RIDING HELMET
Since rider helmets are subject to ageing, it is important to regularly replace them even if they have not been subject to a fall Polycarbonate helmets should be replaced after 3-4 years, helmets or carbon helmets can last 5-6 years. A riding cap should be replaced even after the smallest fall since the smallest cracks in the material can mean less protection down the line.
Protect your helmet optimally by transporting it in a protective cover to prevent scratches and dirt. Exposure to heat can also damage the riding helmet.
